Contrary to Wordsworth’s lament — “The world is too much with us now” — the modern world is hidden beneath a dark veneer of daily news.  Although this planet faces many dangers, billions of us are still here, still creating, still wondering.  But you would never know that from the news, which performs a daily magic trick.  Presto! — some disaster or coup brings some distant country into view. Then — Poof! — the country vanishes, never to be heard from until it suffers the next calamity.
